Slipface

Slipface is a free browser racing game where you drive off-road vehicles across sand that shifts and holds your tire tracks. Race against computer-controlled drivers or take a slower Free Ride to enjoy carving up the dunes. You can start driving without an account or registration.

What is Slipface?

Slipface is an off-road driving game built around ground that deforms beneath your wheels. Rather than racing over a fixed surface, you press grooves into the sand, and the other vehicles do the same. The track becomes visibly churned up as everyone drives through it.

You choose a vehicle and a course from the garage. Race mode gives you laps and checkpoints, with medals earning cups that unlock more tracks and vehicles. Free Ride removes the clock and checkpoints if you would rather experiment with the terrain.

What makes the driving different?

The tire marks are the point, not just decoration. Ruts and soft ground affect the route you are trying to drive, so keeping the accelerator down is not the whole challenge. The creator describes the terrain as a simulation of displaced sand and sinking wheels.

It is especially satisfying to see a smooth slope turn into a mess of tracks. We like the way the vehicles lean and bounce over it: even a short drive gives you something more tactile than following a painted road. Deep sand can also bog you down, so losing momentum is something to pay attention to.

How do you drive and get unstuck?

Use WASD or the arrow keys on a computer. Dune Run is available from the start, and the Test Drive course offers separate lanes for bumps, jumps, water and a climb. Free Ride is a useful starting point if you want to learn the handling without a race clock.

Press T to return to the last checkpoint when stuck. C switches camera views, and the mouse wheel changes the zoom. Escape opens settings, where you can restart the course or return to the main menu.

The settings also let you turn off driver callouts, adjust music, effects and voices separately, or mute the game. That is useful if you mainly want the driving and scenery without the chatter.

Can you play Slipface on a phone?

Yes, it works on a compatible phone with touch controls, but this is a demanding 3D game. It requires a browser and device that support WebGPU. A phone being able to open ordinary websites does not mean it can run this one.

A computer gives the terrain and controls more room. If performance is uneven, try the Low graphics setting; changing graphics quality restarts the level. Older devices may struggle, and the moving camera and fast driving will not suit everyone.

Is it free, and can you play with a friend?

The browser game is free, and you can start a race without signing up or downloading an app. Some courses and vehicles are initially locked behind cups earned through racing, rather than all being available at the beginning.

The game also offers a local two-player split-screen option. Its on-screen instructions assign WASD to player one and the arrow keys to player two. This is a shared-device mode, not a promise of online races with friends.

What we like about Slipface

We found the sand surprisingly satisfying. There is a good reason to take an unhurried drive just to watch the wheels dig in and see the marks left behind. Free Ride makes room for that, alongside the more competitive racing.

The main trade-off is the hardware requirement. This is a bigger commitment for your browser than a lightweight puzzle, and the handling takes a little getting used to. If your device runs it comfortably, the changing surface gives a familiar racing idea a distinctive reason to try it.
