TimeGuessr

TimeGuessr asks you to work out where and when a photograph was taken, then place a pin on a map and choose a year. Clothes, cars, signs and buildings become clues in a five-photo geography and history game.

What is TimeGuessr?

TimeGuessr is a photo-guessing browser game with two answers for every image: a place and a year. You inspect the photograph, select a location on the world map and move the year slider before submitting your guess.

The reveal gives you the date, location and a short description of the scene, alongside separate scores for your two guesses. A round can leave you pleased with your historical detective work and thoroughly embarrassed by your geography.

How do you make a guess?

Choose Play, then start a random game. The settings let you play without a timer or choose a time limit. No timer is a good starting point if you want to examine the details instead of rushing.

Place a pin on the map and select a year using the slider or its arrow controls. Both choices are required before Make guess becomes available. Expand the map when you need more room to choose a location.

Look for specific evidence: a readable sign, a car model, clothing, road markings or a recognizable building. The apparent age of a photograph is only one clue; an old-looking scene does not necessarily mean an old photograph.

How does TimeGuessr scoring work?

Each photograph is worth up to 10,000 points: 5,000 for the year and 5,000 for the location. Closer guesses earn more points. The result tells you how many years and how far your pin was from the answer.

The two scores reward different kinds of observation. Getting the decade close still counts when the location escapes you. After the reveal, continue to the next photograph in the five-round game.

Can you play free, daily or with friends?

Random games and the daily challenge open without an account. The daily option gives you a five-photo challenge from its own homepage button.

There is also a multiplayer section with ranked and friend duels. That section requires signing in or creating a free account. You do not need to do either to try the solo game.

TimeGuessr displays advertising and a consent prompt, with a separate Remove Ads option. It is free to start playing, but it is not an ad-free site.

Does TimeGuessr work on a phone?

Yes. You can inspect the photo, place a map pin, choose a year and submit your answer using touch controls. It runs in the phone browser, so an app download is not required.

A larger screen gives the photograph and map more room. On a phone, expanding the map is useful when choosing a precise location.

What we like about TimeGuessr

We like that it makes you look at ordinary details differently. A shop sign or parked car suddenly matters, and the second question, when, adds something more interesting than simply recognizing a landmark.

The answer descriptions are a reason to stay for the reveal even after a bad guess. You get context for the photograph rather than just a wrong-answer screen. Start without a timer and treat it as a small detective exercise; knowing everything is not a requirement.
