Why does chopping virtual wood work so well?

The appeal is in the follow-through. The axe lands, a pale cut opens through the bark, and another piece separates from the log. Dragging around the stump lets you inspect the result before the next swing.

There is very little to learn and no need to make an event of it. A few chops are enough to see the idea; staying longer is about enjoying the repetition.

How do you play?

Click the scene to split the wood. Drag instead of clicking to rotate your view around the stump. Further chops break the remaining wood into smaller pieces.

The browser toy opens directly, without an account or a game download. You can follow the action visually with your device muted; sound is not needed to operate it.

Does Firewood work on a phone?

We recommend playing on a computer because of a phone-loading issue. The browser version may not load correctly on your phone.

Where did the realistic wood come from?

In the creator’s project post, shapirog explains that they scanned their own yard’s splitting stump, a piece of firewood and their axe. They extracted the wood textures from the scan, used footage of themselves chopping as an animation reference, and recorded the sounds too.

That personal source material is a large part of the charm. This is someone’s actual wood-splitting setup turned into a small thing to play with online.

Do you need the iPhone app?

No. You can ignore the App Store button and keep chopping in your browser. The linked iPhone app is a separate version with its own features; installing it is optional.
