Where Is Mr. Kim?

Where Is Mr. Kim is a free browser game that hides one man in a moving painting of Joseon-era Korea. Drag around the village, zoom in on the crowd and look for the black hat, white robe and fan shown in his portrait.

A village worth getting lost in

The crowd keeps moving while you search. Someone crosses a courtyard; another figure passes a stall. That makes the scene feel different from a static spot-the-character picture, because the patch you just checked will not stay exactly as you left it.

The village is also worth looking at for its own sake. Roofs, trees, jars and little groups of people make the hunt an excuse to explore the painting. There is a nice mismatch between the elaborate setting and your very small job: find this one man.

Use his portrait as your reference. In the current game he wears a black hat and a white robe and carries a fan. Drag to move around the picture, then zoom in when you want a closer look. Click or tap the matching figure to select him.

On a computer, use the mouse wheel or the plus/minus controls to zoom. Arrow keys also move the view. On a phone, drag to explore, pinch to zoom and tap Mr. Kim. Reset view helps you get your bearings again.

Working across one part of the village at a time is more useful than repeatedly scanning the whole crowd. We will leave his hiding place out of the review.

Which paintings can you explore?

The current browser version has two: The Living Village and Chuseok Harvest. The first centers on an everyday village scene; the second brings bright autumn foliage and a harvest celebration. Maps returns you to the choice of paintings.

Play again starts another search. The game says Mr. Kim will be somewhere new, so finding him once does not turn the experience into a fixed answer you can repeat from memory.
